The SE London Green Chain Walking Festival takes place from Saturday 16 to Sunday 24 September 2006 across the London boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich, and Bexley, with over 50 events for people of all ages and abilities.

Festival Launch

The Festival Launch is at 12 noon on Saturday 16 September at the Thames Barrier, led by actress Jenny Agutter, star of American Werewolf in London.

There will be three led walks in the morning from various points on the Green Chain (starting around 10.30/11am from Woolwich Ferry, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Charlton House) to the Thames Barrier.

After the Launch there is free admission to the Thames Barrier Information Centre. There will also be links with buildings taking part in the London Open House Weekend, such as Severndroog Castle in Oxleas Woods.

Festival Week

There is a full program of over 50 events across all four London boroughs on the 40 miles and 300 open spaces of the Green Chain, running from 16 to 24 September 2006. Events include walks for everyone no matter what age or how fit you are, including woodland rambles, architecture trails, a pub crawl, and a Leisure Gardens Tour. Check the web site for details: www.greenchain.com.

Festival Finale

The Finale is on Sunday 24 September 2006 at Beckenham Place Park. At 10.15am there is a walk from Chislehurst Common to Beckenham Place Park via Elmstead Woods. After lunch at the Park, participants can see the artwork created by the Green Chain Schools Outreach Project, which will be displayed at the Mansion. Eight local primary schools have created artworks as part of a Green Chain environmental arts project funded by Transport for London. The aim of the project has been to encourage children to access green spaces, think about conservation issues, and to promote walking.

The festival concludes with a 2pm nature and interest walk around the boundaries of the park led by the Friends of Beckenham Place Park.
