A two-month feasibility study is underway to consider placing mobile phone transmitters at four stations on the Tube. There had been fears that mobile phones could be a way of detonating bombs after the London Bombings of 7 July 2005, but Transport for London are keen to alleviate these concerns, stating how the need for communication in an emergency is so important.
Following the feasibility study, contracts will go out to tender in 2007, so it probably won't be before summer 2008 that you'll see cell phones being used on the Underground. But it is an exciting prospect and could mean the Internet, digital radio, and TV could eventually be broadcast in stations, and wireless Internet "hot spots" could be set up.
The scheme could bring in millions of pounds for the Tube from mobile phone operators.
For now, enjoy the 'peace' on the tube, without the constant ringing of phones and shouts of, "I'm on the Tube!"
