Auguste Rodin was asked to design and make entrance doors for a new museum of decorative arts in Paris. Rodin threw himself into the project and took inspiration from Dante's Divine Comedy and planned to have the link between passion and suffering as the work's key theme.
The completion date kept being extended so Rodin exhibited individual figures from The Gates of Hell, such as The Kiss. The Gates of Hell were never used and were only cast in bronze after Rodin's death.
