This iron chest stood in the Guildhall and served as a safe for the storage of important civic documents, valuables, and the City of London seals. It seems as though not many people could be trusted at the time as the chest was fitted with six locks, and could be opened only by six key-holders together - three aldermen and three 'reputable men of the Commonalty'.
