The Monument
To Commemorate the Great Fire of London

From Laura Porter, About.com

King Charles II instructed Christopher Wren to build The Monument in 1667 after the Great Fire of London to give hope that the "city would soon rise again".

The Monument is the world's tallest single column structure at 202 feet, which is the exact distance from the base of the column to where the Great Fire of London started. It has 311 steps to a viewing platform with spectacular views across the city. There is a small charge to walk to the top, but you do get a certificate to celebrate your achievement!
