The Refectory Review

The Refectory is the cafe at Southwark Cathedral. It is close to the South Bank and major attractions such as the Golden Hinde, Clink Prison Museum, Vinopolis, and Shakespeare's Globe.

The dark marble floor and light wood furniture make for a clean, fresh interior. The staff are polite and helpful and are usually knowledgeable about the meals on offer each day.

In the summer months you can sit in the courtyard and the location, although almost next to major tourist attractions, always seems peaceful.

The lunch menu consists of freshly prepared soups, served with a diverse range of bread. Hot dishes include pasta, stir fries, and traditional, hearty, and healthy English fare. Desserts range from self-service fruit salad to a wide variety of cakes. I can vouch for the chocolate brownie being well-worth £1.75 but I did think £1.65 a little steep for a cup of tea. I recommend visiting with your London Pass as this entitles you to a free tea or coffee then you can splash out on the cakes!

The all day menu comprises sandwiches and filled breads, delicious home-made cakes, freshly baked morning pastries and afternoon tea. There is also a range of soft drinks and a short wine and beer list.
