Conran Dining at Excellent Price

Albion Cafe is another offering from the Conran group where British food and drink is served and main meals are under £10 and perfect cupcakes from the bakery are under £1.

The menu is a revelation of hearty British fare at truly reasonable prices. All is freshly prepared at the open kitchen at the back and it's generous portions. Fish and chips, and British pies are good choices as is the fruit crumble.

The cafe is open all day (8am to midnight, seven days a week) so you could visit for breakfast (served all day), or lunch, or dinner, or anytime.

I've stopped by for a chunky bread sandwich and pot of tea - served under a hand-knitted tea cosy! A slice from one of the freshly baked cakes is always popular too as are the freshly-squeezed fruit juices.

It's part of a Conran project so the building is beautifully renovated and the glass doors along the long side of the cafe open back fully for pavement dining. (Boundary Street is a minor road so traffic is not a problem.)

As well as being a Conran cafe, Albion also has a bakery and small shop. The bakery has bread varieties, cakes and pastries - all reasonably priced. Swirly-iced cupcakes were 75p and chocolate brownies were £1.50. Both were delicious.

Takeaway hot and cold drinks are also available.

The shop focuses on British packaged food from traditional names. Plenty of 'gift food' such as biscuits and teas, plus chocolate to treat yourself.

Seasonal fruit and vegetables are available too, plus cheeses from Neal's Yard Dairy, and snack options.
