Around London with Kids - Fodor's guidebook© Fodor's Travel

The Bottom Line

"68 great things to do together in the city and beyond". My first thought is why 68? They could easily have added a couple more to make a round number; I would suggest Coram's Fields and the Museum of Childhood.

Pros

  • Has more ideas for kids than regular travel books
  • Probably more useful if you know London and want some ideas for days out with the kids
  • Useful games ideas to play while standing in line

Cons

  • No photos and general lack of color
  • Not all atractions listed are in London
  • Would need another travel guide as this doesn't give enough information
  • Odd to stop at 68 thing to do. Why not 70?

Description

Guide Review - Fodor's Around London With Kids

The contents are listed alphabetically and there are no page numbers; just a number assigned to each attraction.

There are no maps of the locations so you do not get a distance perspective which would be useful as many ideas included are not actually in London. It would help to have an idea of the traveling time when planning your days out with kids so consider Fodor's Around London With Kids good for ideas but not your best resource for real planning.

There are some useful groupings of attractions at the back of the book; by area, by theme: freebies, historical, etc, and the bests: best in town, best outdoors, etc.

    Each listing has:
  • Eats for Kids: suggestions for where to eat nearby
  • Keep in Mind: tips on when to visit
  • Hey, kids!: fun facts
  • Plus contact details and age recommendations which is a big help when deciding what to see.
Money-saving tips are included at the start but it doesn't mention that under 5s are usually admitted free or that under 11s travel free on the tube when accompanied by an adult with an Oyster card. Or that Oyster cards gives the cheapest fares but I do agree that The London Pass is a great option to save money on seeing lots of attractions.

I felt some useful information has been missed out such as that the Museum in Docklands has a large soft play area in Mudlarks for the under 5s. Nor is there a mention of the fact that you can't take buggies on the London Eye. Another useful tip would be that the London Eye capsules have glass to the floor so is good for small/short children.

The small format makes it a useful second travel guide as it has more ideas for ideas for kids than you usually get but you'll probably need another guidebook as well.
