The 162 room Staybridge Suites London Stratford City is an extended stay hotel for business travelers looking for a home-from-home, whilst being well located for easy access to the City, Excel and Canary Wharf.
Staybridge Suites London Stratford City is the first Staybridge Suites property to open in London and the third in the UK alongside Liverpool and Newcastle, which opened in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
The hotel offers spacious apartment-style living with modern amenities and hotel services to create a welcoming environment for guests who need to stay in the area for weeks or even months at a time.
Staybridge Suites London Stratford City has been virtually full since opening in May 2012, and although it was not built solely for the London 2012 Olympics it is fair to say that will be a good kick start for the business as the hotel overlooks the Olympic Park. They already have some big name corporate clients and intend to serve London's business community well.
The one bedroom suite is large at 40sq m and the studio is more than adequate at 28.5sq m. It's a most un-hotel-like hotel as it has a feeling of coming home to somewhere quiet and calm, and as many come for long stays it needs to feel like home, albeit a rather luxurious one.
In the bathrooms, the one bedroom suite has a bath and the studio has a shower only. There aren't miniature toiletries to steal but there are 'normal' sized toiletries provided.
Instead of passing the bathroom as you enter, as in most hotel rooms, here you see the kitchen first which is more like a home. The kitchen has all you'd expect and there's a Waitrose and M&S for food shopping in Westfield Stratford City which is literally on the doorstep. The Reception also stocks some popular snacks if you don't fancy going out.
There is no in-house restaurant but you have a fitted kitchen so can dine in or head over to one of the 65 food and beverage outlets in Westfield Stratford City, or go down and across to Holiday Inn's 'Twenty Twelve' restaurant.
A Sociable Place To Stay
As this is a home-from-home, there is a separate space for guests to head to for relaxing and catching up with friends: The Living Room area which has a Staybridge Suites trademark fireplace. Here guests can help themselves to refreshments 24/7 so there's no need to have a cuppa in your room on your own. There's also complimentary breakfast on offer every day with an extensive choice, and daily newspapers are always available in the Living Room too.
The Den is where you can choose a book from the shelves, play board games or use the electronic games. There's a great outdoor terrace for sunny days too, plus a laundry room with free facilities, and a Fitness Room facing the Olympic Park.
A 'calendar of events' is pinned on the kitchen noticeboard in every room and there are regular Evening Socials where the hotel management team and guests can relax with complimentary beer, wine and nibbles and get to know each other without the formalities. For those working away from home, these social events can be a chance to get to make some friends to have dinner with, etc. A couple actually met at one of the Newcastle Staybridge Suites socials and are now married!
More About The Rooms
As well as the free wifi throughout the building, every suite has an Apple TV which can connect to your iPhone or Mac. This allows you to view movies downloaded to your device on the TV or to download shows on the TV but keep them on your device and take them with you.
A suitcase, or more, easily fits under the bed and the wardrobe should be adequate for most although there isn't much full length hanging space. Guest can use extra storage lockers if they want to leave things for their next stay or store larger items.
Housekeeping tidy the suites every weekday and do a thorough clean once a week. They are always available if needed over the weekend but like to try and give guests some quiet time.
While many London hotels and apartments add artworks of London to the rooms, Staybridge Suites keeps the rooms classic and timeless and specially commissioned artworks of the local area can be seen in the hallways and public areas.
I Have Stayed Here
I had a really good night's sleep here and was impressed as there is an extensive transport network right next door yet I heard nothing with the window closed. Those transport links and the shopping at Westfield Stratford City will make this a great place to stay for business travelers and those looking for peace in the evenings during their stay in London.
While Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn are in the same building in Chestnut Plaza next to the London 2012 Olympic Park, and are both part of IHG, they were designed as two properties and cater for different markets. Whereas Staybridge Suites is intended as a home for business travelers, Holiday Inn caters for the leisure market and short-term holiday-makers.
Located in a single building, the hotels benefit from excellent transport links nearby including Stratford International Rail Station, Underground and DLR.
The Holiday Inn (Compare Rates) is well worth considering for a London stay too as this is the only Holiday Inn in the UK offering free wifi. (You can buy extra for streaming, if needed but the basic wifi is fine for emails and social media, etc.)
In the Holiday Inn there are two room types and the Standard Double Room is bigger than I expected. You can upgrade to the Executive Room for only £20 more and receive complimentary mineral water and chocolates, a minibar, and a sofabed. The location has influenced the design and there are different sports themes on each floor: swimming, cycling, running, and field.
