Charles Jennens An exhibition coming to the Handel House Museum soon will highlight Handel's unknown collaborator and the first Editor of Modern Shakespeare. Can you name him? No, I couldn't either so am looking forward to this exhibition about Charles Jennens.

Jennens (1700-1773) provided the words for many of Handel's finest works including The Messiah. He was also the first person to publish Shakespeare's plays in single volumes, producing the first modern editions of King Lear, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth and Julius Caesar between 1770 and 1774. Again, this landmark is uncelebrated.

The exhibition includes Handel's autographed score of the oratorio Saul which also has alterations made by Jennens, and letters between Handel and Jennens including one in which Handel asks Jennens to supply him with more words.

Charles Jennens: The Man Behind Messiah runs from 21 November 2012 to 14 April 2013. Image source: The Press Office | London Travel Blog
