I think it's clear I'm a London geek so a book that covers "Everything you need to know about London and more" was bound to attract me. The Bumper Book of London is technically a family/children's book but that doesn't mean it only has the usual 'facts' and nothing new for someone like me.Did you know King Charles Spaniels were used as hot water bottles on the laps of noble ladies being driven in open carriages in the 17th century? Or that the origin of to 'spend a penny' refers to the first public toilets, called "retiring rooms" at the 1851 Great Exhibition? No, neither did I which is why this book is such a great read.
As with any book, as soon as it goes to print, geeks and historians try and spot mistakes and there are a few but mostly it's solid stuff you can use in pub quizzes or entertain your friends with. Did you know Thames is the most ancient name recorded in England, apart from Kent (a county south of London)? I'll stop there. The Bumper Book of London is a wonderful way to get instil a love of London from an early age. Read my full review...
