How To Identify UK Trees and Wild Flowers

Tuesday October 28, 2008
Isn't it great to walk around London parks or Kew Gardens at this time of year, but wouldn't it be great if there was a pocket-sized reference to identify British trees and wild flowers? Hang on a minute, there is! A huge thank you to The Woodland Trust shop for producing these handy swatch books.

There's a Leaf Identification Swatch Book with leaves and twigs from 32 common UK tree and shrub species. The reverse of each page includes a brief description of the tree or shrub, an interesting fact about the species and where it is likely to be found.

There's also a Wild Flower Identification Swatch Book with close up photos of 28 woodland wild flowers. Common species such as bluebells and snowdrops feature alongside less well-known flowers such as greater stitchwort, bugle and yellow archangel. To aid identification, species are grouped according to their seasonal flowering time and the reverse of each page includes a brief description of the flower, where it is likely to be found and when it is in bloom. And at only 12cm in diameter, this handy pocket-sized book is great for taking out and about.

These swatch books are priced at £4.99 each or you buy both (Swatch Book multipack) for just £7.99. What a great gift idea!

I agree that these swatch books are really great. So simple and easy to use and beautifully put together.

If you are online you can also try Kew’s interactive tree identification guide which covers many of its top trees.
