Friday 23 May – Monday 25 August 2008
Six international street artists have been commissioned create artworks directly on the walls of the iconic river façade of Tate Modern. This is the first major public museum display of Street Art in London. Some may want to call this graffiti but it seems the art world's view point is that graffiti is text-based and street art is more visual.
Street Art at Tate Modern opens at the same time as Tate Modern's four day festival of art and performance, UBS Openings: The Long Weekend on Friday 23 May 2008 and fits with the theme for this year's event – States of Flux.
During the day, the gallery will be buzzing with performances to watch and opportunities to get involved. Larry Miller, one of the artists involved in the influential Fluxus movement from the 60s and 70s, will program a series of surreal sports events for the first ever Flux-Olympiad, including soccer games played on stilts, slow-speed bicycle races and the balloon shotput. Founding Fluxus artist George Maciunas (1931 - 1978) conceived the idea of a Flux-Olympiad in the 1960s but this event was never fully realized.
In the evenings, Tate Modern will host unmissable one-off live events mixing music and film in the dramatic and atmospheric setting of the Turbine Hall.
