Grant Museum of Zoology

The Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy is a real 'find'. Its entrance has moved to a side road just off Tottenham Court Road so it can take a bit of hunting down but it's worth it. The Grant Museum is a university museum and was created back in 1827 as there were no teaching resources available. Robert Edmond Grant has left London was a fantastic legacy as the museum is full of skeletons of extinct animals. I had never even heard of a dugong which was the first skeleton I saw as I entered the small, one room museum. It's like a Victorian laboratory but you're allowed to be there. There's usually some specimens out for handling - just ask the curators to show you and they are only too willing to oblige. And to offer all this for free is just great. I'll certainly be popping in regularly.
For a small fee you can become a Friend of the Museum which has the added benefit of adopting a specimen in the museum. You get your name displayed next to your chosen specimen which could make a really great present or surprise for a visitor. Find out more about supporting the Grant Museum.
