How Tall Is Nelson's Column?

We've always thought Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square was 185 feet (56 meters) tall but it turns out now it's actually 16 feet shorter than that at 169 feet. How do we know? Well, laser measurements have been taken during the current renovations. The accurate height, from street level to the top of Nelson's bicorne hat, is 169 feet 5¾ inches (51.659 meters). So now we know!

It’s metres, not meters. This is a UK website, not American isn’t it?

While I am English, this site is owned by About.com which is part of the New York Times Company, so yes, is American. I have been asked to write in American English as much as possible.
